Guide

Read this before you call one policy a plan.

Short notes on the four lines of a Risk Protection Package. Not marketing. Not a substitute for a file review — a way to arrive at the meeting already speaking the language.

Life insurance

Level term life insurance

The premium stays level. The death benefit stays level. When the term ends, so does the coverage — unless you convert it or replace it.

Life insurance

Whole life insurance

A permanent contract. The premium is designed to stay level, the death benefit does not expire at year 20, and the cash value is guaranteed on a schedule — not hoped for.

Note 01

The Risk Protection Package, in four pieces

Life, disability, long-term care, and annuities. If you cannot name what you own in each, the package is not current.

Most households buy life insurance, file the policy, and stop. That covers one way a paycheck can disappear. Illness, a long recovery, years of care, and a retirement that outlives the portfolio are different problems. They need different contracts.

We use one question in the first ten minutes: is your Risk Protection Package current and up to date? Current means you can point to a death benefit that matches the people who depend on you, a disability check that would actually pay the mortgage, a care plan that is not “we’ll figure it out,” and an income plan for the years after work.

You will not always buy all four on day one. You should always know which of the four is empty. That is the difference between a package and a pile of policies.

Note 02

Term or permanent: a plain decision

If the need has an end date, term usually wins. If the need is death itself, you want a contract that cannot expire.

Most households need a large number for a defined stretch of years: a mortgage, children at home, a business still being built. Term life buys that number at the lowest premium. When the job is done, the policy is done.

Permanent coverage exists for a different job. Estate tax. A spouse who will never return to work. A child who will always need support. A buy-sell that must still be funded at 78. Those needs do not retire when you do.

The expensive mistake is using whole life to solve a term problem, or letting a term policy expire while a permanent need is still sitting there. We separate the jobs, then we fund each one with the right contract.

Note 03

Disability is the paycheck most people skip

A working household that owns life insurance and no disability coverage has insured the less likely way the income stops.

Group long-term disability at work is a start. Benefits are often capped, taxable if the employer pays the premium, and defined as “any occupation” after a short own-occupation period. That is not the same as a personal policy that pays if you cannot do your job.

Own-occupation coverage is the standard for physicians, attorneys, and other specialists for a reason. We also fund business overhead and disability buy-sells, because a practice has bills whether or not you can see patients.

The window to buy this is while you are healthy. A back, a heart, a mental-health file — underwriting remembers. If the Risk Protection Package is going to be current, disability usually belongs in it before the hybrid life policy does.

Note 04

Long-term care is not a Medicare problem

Custodial care will spend a house in any state. Health insurance will not show up for it.

Medicare pays for skilled care, briefly. It does not pay for the years of help with dressing, bathing, and a safe house. That bill is private, or Medicaid after a spend-down. A Risk Protection Package that is “current” on life and silent on care is only current on paper.

Traditional LTC, hybrid life with a care rider, and care-leveraged annuities are three different tools. Traditional is usually the most benefit per premium if you can qualify. Hybrids answer “what if I never use it.” Annuity designs can put money you already have to work.

Self-funding is a legitimate fourth choice — if the portfolio can actually write the check for five years of care without wrecking a spouse’s income. We will say so when that is true, and we will say so when it is a wish.

Note 05

An annuity is a paycheck, not a product category

Used cleanly, it is income you cannot outlive. Used as a sales pitch, it is a fee in a wrapper.

Social Security is an annuity. A pension is an annuity. A SPIA or a QLAC is the same idea, bought from a carrier: a check for as long as you live. That is the job. Sequence-of-returns risk in a portfolio is the problem it solves.

Indexed and multi-year guaranteed contracts are different jobs — a floor on savings, a known rate for a known term. They can hold the money until the income years. They are not a substitute for owning the market, and we will not describe them that way.

The Risk Protection Package includes an annuity when the household needs a paycheck that cannot be outlived, or a conservative bucket with a floor. It does not include one because a seminar had nice sandwiches.

Note 06

How much coverage is enough

Start with the people who would still have bills if your income stopped. Then subtract what you already own.

For life insurance, a useful starting point is the DIME method: Debts, Income replacement, Mortgage, Education — plus a modest amount for final expenses. Add those, then subtract existing life insurance and liquid assets the family could actually use.

Disability is a monthly number: a percentage of take-home pay, for the years you would still have a mortgage and children at home. Long-term care is a daily or monthly benefit times a realistic number of years, priced to the market where you live. Annuity income is the gap between the retirement paycheck you want and Social Security plus pensions.

Do not buy a round million because it sounds complete. Size each line of the package. Our review does this in the open so you can disagree with any line before we talk.

Bring a question, not a brochure.

If something here disagrees with a policy you already own, that is a useful meeting. We would rather keep a good contract than replace it. The first question is always the same: is the Risk Protection Package current?
